Wishes and Horses- (c) Dec.21.1976
D/ G A G A D Bm
As I remember the saying “if wishes were horses, beggars would ride” I first heard from my Mom or Gram...and we were down at a pond in Myles Standish ,Joe,5 or 6, was playing in the water,I was reading and watching from the shore and a mother brought her kids along to swim- one, maybe with cerebral palsy was in a wheelchair and watched as everyone elsewent into the water...and he lifted his head to watch as a large bird sailed over the treetops ...a tableau to me of the unfairness of life’s lottery ...so the words and music came quickly together -using the race and
ticket and dream themes. it’s probably the saddest ,”darkest” song of the several hundred I wrote- but it’s true, and one thing I always am is aware and grateful for the wonderful good fortune I have every day of my life. My Dad, metaphysical in his own special way, said that this was the best song I wrote and should have been on the album...
Pick your pony to carry your fortune
up to the wire.
She’s your only chance for changing
last across the line...
*************
Chorus-
If wishes were horses then beggars would ride-
If dreaming was doing we’d all do just fine.
And if hoping was having we’d have all that we’d need-
Bur wishes aren’t horses - and they never will be....
***********
Lucky tickets- hopeful holders
wave up and down.
When it’s over- it always is
they lie torn upon the ground...
**********
Chorus
We are dreamers who are looking
for one sure thing-
With our inside information-
nothing ventured, nothing gained..
Chorus-
If wishes were horses then beggars would ride...
But wishes aren’t horses and they never will be... and they never will be....
